Techniques using additional or alternative crochet tools

These are some of the techniques which use alternative or extra tools.  Some use different types of hooks, others use additional tools to create the different effects.

Tunisian Crochet

Tunisian Crochet (or Afghan Crochet as it is called in the US) uses a slightly different hook.  It is longer and has a knob on the end like a knitting needle.

All the stitches are worked on then worked back off.

The result looks like a combination between knitting and crochet.

Broomstick Crochet

Broomstick crochet is worked over a large pin, similar to a knitting needle.  Loops are pulled out and placed over the needle.

The loops are slipped off and double crochet is worked into them.

Some rows are ordinary stitches (usually Double Crochet).  The effect changes depending on the stitches and spacing used.

Hairpin Lace

Hairpin Lace is worked on a "Hairpin" loom.  The loom is constantly turned around to make loops at the side.

It is worked in strips which are then joined together.

Tutorials can be found at -

There are various ways of joining the strips together.

This sample is joined by interlocking the loops.

Crochet on the Double

Also known as “Crohooking” or “Croknit”.  Itis worked using a double ended hook and two strands of yarn.

Loops are worked on to the hook as with Tunisian crochet.

They are then worked off with a second colour.

The next row of loops are worked on to the hook with the second colour and worked back off with the first.

The fabric produced is almost double sided, with each colour being more prominent on one side than another.
