Granny Square

1st Round
1.
Chain 4, slip stitch together to form a ring.
2.
Chain 4 (counts as 1st treble and 1 chain)
3.
Working into the ring, make 3 treble and 1 chain.
4.
Repeat the last step twice more.
5.
Make another 2 treble into the ring and slip stitch under the 1st 4 chain made.

You have now completed your 1st round but it doesn't look much like a square, does it?

2nd Round Turn your work around and continue in the opposite direction for this round.

1.
Chain 4 (counts as 1st treble and 1 chain)
2.
In the same place, work 3 treble.
3.
In the next chain space, work 3 treble, 1 chain, 3 treble
4.
Repeat the last step for the next 2 chain spaces.
5.
In the same place as you worked the 1st 4 chain, work another 2 treble and slip stitch under the 4 chain as you did on the 1st round.

You have completed your 2nd round.  It looks like a square now.

3rd Round Turn your work around and continue in the opposite direction for this round.

1.
Chain 4 (counts as 1st treble and 1 chain).

In the same place, work 3 treble.

2.
In the space between the next 2 groups of 3 trebles, work 3 treble.
3.
In the next chain space, work 3 treble, 1 chain, 3 treble.
4.
Repeat the last 2 steps for the next 2 sides and chain spaces.

In the space between the next 2 groups of 3 trebles, work 3 treble.

5.
In the same place as you worked the 1st 4 chain, work another 2 treble and slip stitch under the 4 chain as you did on the 1st and 2nd rounds.

You have now completed your 3rd round.

Continue working in this way, turn your work after each round, work 3 tr in the space between groups of tr along the side and (3 tr, 1 ch, 3 tr) in each chsp on the corners.

Each round you work will have one extra space on each side.

You may find it helpful to mark the 1st 4 chain of each row so you don't work past it.

Why do I turn my work after each row?

1.  I was taught to do it this way as a child.

2. It makes the square reversible, there is no right or wrong side.

3. The work turns out straighter. Working the same way all the time makes the square a little wonky.

Make a square without turning and look at the difference.
