Terms and Abbreviations

Term (UK) Abbreviation (UK) Description
Alternative alt Usually used to tell you to do 2 or more different actions in turn
Approximately approx. An estimated amount
Beginning beg at the front or start of
Chain ch One of the main crochet stitches
Chain space chsp The space left when working one or more chains in a row
Continue(d) cont carry on or carried on
Decrease dec Working 2 or more stitches together to make less stitches in the row.
Double Crochet dc One of the main stitches
Double Crochet 2 together dc2tog A decreasing stitch
Increase inc Working 2 or more stitches into the same stitch to increase the number of stitches in a row.
Right Side rs This is the FRONT of the work. 
Slip Stitch ss One of the main stitches.  Used mainly for joining or when not wanting to create fabric.

Together tog
Turning Chain tch This is the chain worked at the beginning of a row, sometimes in place of a stitch, when turning.
Yarn Over Hook yoh Winding the yarn around the hook when forming stitches
